Prevention of Abuse in Nursing Homes
The following information is intended to assist you in preventing abuse to your loved one when they are residents of a nursing home. Some nursing homes provide good care and some provide poor care. You should choose a nursing home carefully. It is a good idea to choose a nursing home close to family members who will visit regularly, but location should not be the only factor in selecting a nursing home. Ask for referrals of prospective nursing homes from friends, fellow employees, or people at your church. Another good source is the Area Supervisor for the State Ombudsman. Call the State Ombudsman’s office at (405) 521-6734 and ask for…

For decades, we have mailed newsletters, agendas, etc. through the postal service. Now this has become an expensive luxury that we simply have to curtail. Mailed correspondence adds up significantly over the course of year when you consider the costs for personnel, paper, envelopes, printing and postage. Beginning next month, all of our newsletters, minutes, agendas, etc. will be posted on our webpage www.ASCOG.org. Additionally, we will continue to provide these types of correspondence by…

Medicare will pay doctors for end-of-life talks with patients
As of January 1, 2016 change to the Medicare program that will reimburse physicians for having advance care planning conversations with elderly patients, crafting a personal guidebook of sorts for a doctor to know just how aggressively (or minimally) a patient would like to be treated. Advanced care planning doesn’t mean shunning aggressive care or choosing a Do Not Resuscitate Order; people can also specify in their care directives that they want “everything done.” Center to Advance Palliative Care – CAPC.ORG For detailed information, contact Oklahoma State Long-Term Care Ombudsman Supervisors Ruben Sotelo, direct: 580-736-7975, sote_ru@ascog.org, or Darin Terry, direct: 580-736-7974, terr_da@ascog.org, toll free: 1-800-658-1466.
